Reporter Lee Jae-hoon = The end of the book is the beginning of the exhibition.

A playlist of 33 songs was included in the final chapter of “How Many Full Moons Will I See?”, a posthumous collection of Japanese master musician Ryuichi Sakamoto (1952-2023, 坂本龍一) recently published in Korea. The requiems Sakamoto left at his own funeral to be played.

The total running time of these songs, titled ‘Funeral: Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Last Playlist’, is approximately 2 hours and 42 minutes. The last song on the playlist is ‘Breath’ by American electronic musician Laurel Halo. After walking slowly around Namsan and Myeongdong for about two hours and reaching the gallery ‘Piknic’ located on a hill near Hoehyeon Station, you feel breathless and you reach ‘Breece’.

At the picnic, Sakamoto’s posthumous collection and memorial exhibition of the same name are being held. Wherever Sakamoto’s traces are buried, he resembles him. Sakamoko’s representative song ‘Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence’ resonates in a minimalist black and white space. On the screen, he plays calmly.

In the Disney+(+) music documentary ‘SUGA: Road to D-DAY’, Suga played ‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence’ on a piano placed in Sakamoto’s private room. Sakamoto also performed this song himself for Suga. Sakamoto wrote an anecdote about meeting Suga in ‘How many full moons will I see from now on’ and remembered him as “a young man serious about music”. Suga commemorated each stage of “Snooze”, in which Sakamoto featured on the piano during his solo tour that ended last month, saying, “I hope you have a safe trip.”

Sakamoto’s music is a building with physical properties. It is the aesthetics of ambient music that creates loneliness. Listening to music makes you look into yourself. The space where the Sakamoto Memorial Exhibition is being held is optimal for taking such an attitude. It is music clothed in space. “I’m going to live with cancer. I’m thinking of making a little more music. I’d appreciate it if you would watch over me.” there is.

In the exhibition, you can also see photos related to ‘life, its natural appearance’, which was conducted under the title of ‘Experiment to return to nature’. I left the piano in the yard, but it got closer to the original tree condition. Sakamoto wrote, “How will it rot like this? I feel that it is also connected to how we humans should age.”

Music has emotions that penetrate both human strength and weakness. Can music dealing with tragedy be gowa? Can the music made in the process of going towards death be beautiful? The moment we believe we are free from death, we are imprisoned there, and the moment we believe we are imprisoned in death, we are more free. The works that Sakamoto showed just before his death reached that level. Art is long, life is short. This word, which has become a cliché, is extremely evoked after meeting Sakamoto. In the exhibition, you can see photos of video artist Nam June Paik and contemporary music composer John Cage, who were artists who interacted with Sakamoto, and videos of Japan’s representative media art group ‘Dum Type’. Viewing is free. until the next 30 days.
