Reporter Lee Jae-hoon = To feel the power of the voice of jazz vocalist Kim Joon (83), you have to experience the stage yourself. However, he shows that ‘life has become jazz’, giving a unique rhythm and tone to conversation.

Joon Kim, who majored in vocal music at Kyunghee University, is from the ‘Johnny Brothers’, a quartet that dominated the 1960s. This team sang the theme song for the movie of the same name of the movie ‘Red Scarf’ (1964, director Shin Sang-ok), which is known as an immortal hit song. Afterwards, Kim Joon turned solo in the 1970s and wrote a record called ‘Korean Jazz Vocal 1st Generation’. Still active and forever active, it is a ‘living history of the jazz world’.

Not long ago, I met him while he was hospitalized at a hospital in Jongno-gu, Seoul after suffering a fracture during stage practice, and it was still vivid. Just then, the doctor in charge, who visited the hospital, recommended that he leave the hospital early, saying, “I am in much better condition than I thought.”

On July 5, at 7:30 pm, he was able to easily stand on the stage for a scheduled concert at the Event Hall on the 3rd floor of the Textile Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The concert is held to commemorate the album ‘What a Wonderful World – A Tribute to Kim Jun’ dedicated to Kim Jun. Kim Joon plans to sing several songs, including the jazz standard ‘What a Wonderful World’, which has become his signature song.

The album was produced and produced by Woongsan, the president of the Korea Jazz Association and a jazz diva. Woongsan carefully selected 8 songs from Joon Kim’s original works and recreated them into new performances and songs together with himself and junior jazz musicians such as Yu Sa-rang and Joo-mi Lee. Popular singer Kim Jang-hoon participated as a vocalist in ‘Don’t Ask Why’, one of the b-side songs.

Woongsan explained, “Few people know that Mr. Kim Joon, who was interested in the interface between jazz and Korean songs, was a pioneer in popularizing jazz. This is why junior musicians, including myself, formed a consensus on the dedication album and joined together.” did. Jazz critic Nam Moo-seong commented, “The process of reinterpreting the art world of an old man who was overlooked by the public according to the times and refining it while discussing with Mr. Kim Jun is a great scene that showed the genealogy of Korean jazz in itself.”

Regarding the album, Kim Joon said, “I didn’t even think about it. I was so moved that I didn’t know what to do.” The following is a Q&A with Kim Jun.

– How do you feel about this tribute album?

“I’m a popular singer when I started singing with Johnny Brothers, but I’ve never thought of doing music for the public. Since I majored in music, I started knowing it as a vocation. I never thought that today’s results would come to fruition. “

– The fact that you are playing jazz in Korea is evidence that you are not conscious of the public. (Laughs) But recently, an analysis shows that the favorable response to jazz is gradually increasing.

“I get that feeling when I’m on stage. There are a lot of active maniacs. I’ve always thought it would be difficult to popularize jazz, but I didn’t know there would be so many maniacs.”

– How did you first meet Mr. Woongsan?

“There used to be a club near Yeongdong Intersection (Seoul). We happened to meet while performing there, and I heard Woongsan sing. At the time, I was doing Latin jazz music. They said I did a lot of rock music, so I liked the ‘shouting’ aspect. Her voice was charming and rhythmic, so she praised me because she seemed to have ‘jazz-like musicianship.’ Standards like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, and Julie London We talked a lot about jazz singers. He also advised me to listen to a lot of music played. Instrumental performances are more improvised than vocals. There is a lot more creativity, so it’s helpful to listen with the idea that vocals are participating. It becomes a lot. I also listened to a lot of performance music.”

-You have also been active as a composer. (Kim Joon has composed over 1,000 songs in the meantime. Representative songs include ‘Because I Love You’ (Patty Kim), ‘I’m Here Now’ (Park Kyung-hee), and ‘Jeans Lady’ (Park Sang-min). am.)

“It’s embarrassing, but I’m not a composition major. I did vocal music in college. I had a friend who was a composer in my class, so I just listened to it over my shoulder and learned it. I had to debut as a singer. I’m a popular singer, so I have to sing popular songs. But the first record label I went to said, ‘Jun Kim has four voice chords and sings a lot of pop songs and American music, so he’s not good at pop songs and he won’t fit in.’ When I left the office, I thought, “I’m like a rookie singer, so I can’t get songs by famous composers. I’ll have to make and release my own song.” After that, I went to Oasis Records and met President Son Jin-seok. ‘Because I love you’ and the satirical song ‘Honey, look at me’, etc. After that, I said, ‘I want to do a pop song, jazz’, and he agreed to do it, so I prepared an album right away. So, the first songs that came out were ‘ Whistle Hike’, ‘Because I love you’, ‘My heart is a balloon’.”

– These are songs that are not old-fashioned even if you listen to them now.

“But at that time, those songs weren’t popular. I don’t even think they were ahead of me. They weren’t popular, so it was hard for the company to actively promote them.”

-But why did CEO Son Jin-seok decide to make an album?

“Coming to think of it now, this guy is from the Department of English at Seoul National University. He is the first person in Korea to sign a license agreement with EMI. Since he speaks English directly, he imported songs made in foreign countries, so I think he had a lot of interest in foreign pop songs and jazz. Lucky for me. When I think of you, I just want to thank you.”

-‘Red Scarf’ is also a very meaningful song. How did you end up recording it?

“The rhythm was also different from the popular music at the time. It was not a military song or a marching song, but it should be called ‘shuffle rhythm’ (one of the jazz rhythms popular in the 1920s). I heard that it was made in such a way that there was no theme song at the preview room in Malli-dong, so director Shin Sang-ok asked composer Hwang Moon-pyeong to make a song quickly, and as they went to the studio of Donga Broadcasting Station (which was in Gwanghwamun at the time) to record, they wrote a song in the car. But that day, Johnny Brothers were in the broadcasting station’s studio. We won a special prize in the Dong-A Broadcasting Station singing contest and were exclusive singers. Composer Hwang also judged. We also knew how to read sheet music. You know, I was good at sight singing (making notes only by looking at the sheet music). I immediately made a preliminary recording and took it to Malli-dong, and director Shin Sang-ok liked it. After that, I made an orchestra at Chungmuro Studio and recorded properly at the same time.”

-You also voiced Sebastian in the Disney musical animation ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘Lumie’ in ‘Beauty and the Beast’. You sang songs like ‘Under the Sea’ yourself, right?

“A director from an American film company came to direct and went. I directed Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore myself, and he praised me for saying that I was the closest to the original. Hyungju Yoon, my junior, introduced me to voice acting for animation. (The place where the first creative musical in Korea, ‘Saljjagi Obseoye’ was performed as the origin of the current Seoul Musical Troupe), so they had musical experience, so they seemed to have me in mind. There were several candidates, but I got lucky. Cartoon movie It was my first experience recording, but it was fun. It was a good work even for adults. But I had a lot of trouble. It was not easy to kiss while looking at the screen.”

– I think the Yegreen orchestra experience has been of great help to you in musicals.

“Yes, that’s right. I appeared in ‘Say to live’ and ‘Seoul, Seoul, Seoul’, but I was able to do it because I had musical experience as well as lines.”

-Your voice on the stage is still the same, and most of all, it’s amazing how you maintain your dignity as a ‘jazz vocalist’. I personally confirmed why he is known as the ‘gentleman of the jazz world’. And when you get older, you can’t find any traces of authority that you can naturally learn.

“I’ve never managed my voice separately. I think it’s natural. )’, and as I kicked the ball, I realized that soccer has a beat and rhythm. It’s not just kicking the ball, it’s syncopation. I felt that there was a syncopation (syncopation sound). If the movement was rhythmic, the defender couldn’t mark it. It’s not that, it’s not that, it’s because you take a break and beat the timing, so you steal the timing. I was good at soccer too. Haha. I created a chance by centering and going all over the place with a rhythm. I used music while playing soccer. Brazilian soccer ‘Samba Rhythm’ is like that. You know, that’s really ‘syncopation’. So you can’t stop it. The same goes for golf. If you have rhythm, you have a lot of power. Rhythm is important in sports too. It has to do with breathing. That sense has become a part of life thanks to jazz. My daily life has become more rhythmic.”

– Has there been any change between the definition you gave when you started jazz and the definition you have of jazz now?

“I’ve been looking down a lot on the definition of jazz, but after summarizing it myself, first of all, the natural thing is attractive. The act itself is free. It is very creative. Listening to the stories of jazz musicians who have reached the top, adlibs in ‘a state of nothingness’ But it doesn’t come out right away, it accumulates in the process of learning and is expressed through motives. Above all, jazz is music of spiritual performance. ‘You have to have a soul. You can’t predict it because of the variety of rhythms. Other music is predictable, but jazz isn’t like that. It touches people’s lives. That’s why jazz doesn’t matter if you’re good or bad. It’s music that doesn’t need evaluation. It’s creative, but who can evaluate it? So you have no choice but to evaluate yourself conscientiously. You have to evaluate yourself whether you are doing well or not. That is why it is music that needs to be conscientious and honest. Also, when you see them playing, it seems like they don’t mind anything. But that’s absolutely not the case. There is ‘complete order in chaos.’ It is played without commitment, but the ad-libs do not deviate from the chord work. Also, one of the important characteristics of jazz is that dissonance is allowed. That becomes music. Ten fingers play the keyboard. “Jazz is allowed even if you press all of them. Also, I didn’t rely on accompaniment while working. I’ve never given information to the arranger about the songs I composed. This also means that it’s good music for harmony. Understanding each other and making concessions to each other.” The act itself is ‘society’, or society. It is music in which different genres and cultures meet to express one theme. At the same time, it is jazz that can express ‘the most me’.”

– Listening to the word makes me like jazz even more.

“Since I made jazz a part of my life, my thoughts have reached that point. From the beginning, I considered music as a vocation. I have pursued only my world of music without compromising with the times. The thought of receiving recognition came first. Only when we get that kind of recognition can we perform together. If we do not acknowledge each other, it is impossible to perform together.”

-You have sung on many stages. Is there a stage you want to stand on more in the future? In what form do you want to work more on the album?

“After the Johnny Brothers disbanded, I sang as a soloist at the Walkerhill Pacific nightclub in the 1970s. At the time, I was the exclusive singer there, and I sang with a big band of about 34 members, but I miss those days. The album is recorded by just the two of us with the piano. I want to record the song with acoustic sound. I think that is the song that is most like me. It is not dependent on me. The reason I like Harry Belafonte is because he is good at a cappella. No one. It’s just singing without accompaniment. In the end, I think I’ll go that way too.”
