On the 13th, Megabox COEX Dolby Cinema. It was only after the sing-along screening of ‘Jaurim, the Wonderland’, a documentary about the life of the rock band ‘Jaurim’, that a low chorus rang out.
In 2018, it was a documentary that was difficult to come out of in the atmosphere like the sing-along scene of the movie ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, which caused a syndrome by dealing with the British band ‘Queen’. Jaurim, who celebrated the 25th anniversary of his debut last year, contained the album and concert activity he did with 117 fans, but this is because Jaurim’s songs are crying from the beginning.
As mentioned in this documentary, Jaurim uses ‘optimistic defeatism’ as a basis. To Jaurim, the notes on the score are bitter. A way of solidarity by letting out the same cries as those who are full of traces of self-harm.
In a conversation with the audience after the screening, when the audience asked if it was difficult to make comforting music, Kim Yoon-a, the vocalist of Jaurim, replied, “Band music should be like that.”
Even though it was a sing-along screening, some fans asked to see the movie again, regretting that there was no singing throughout the screening, but everyone already knew it was okay. Jaurim’s songs such as ‘I’m a fan’ and ‘Twenty Five, Twenty One’ have always been ‘singing together of life’ if you are young.

Directors Kim Ji-hwan and Heo Min unravel the documentary in a straightforward way. It is also in line with the lives of Kim Yuna, bassist Kim Jinman, and guitarist Lee Seonkyu, who have been steadily making music for over 25 years. A famous song like ‘I’m Sorry, I Hate You’ was not included in the documentary because there was no corner to fit it into the context. Director Kim Ji-hwan said, “The current version is like Jaurim.”
Kim Yoon-a, who attended the sing-along screening on the day of ‘Wedding Anniversary’, said that it would be cool to sing when she was 80 years old, and walked the path of a female singer-songwriter who hadn’t been in Korea before. Above all, she is a pro. She added that in stage performances featuring emotional songs, she uses her ‘mechanical brain’ rather than soaking in emotion. This is so that she can “continue to perform without her vocalizations becoming muffled”.
One of the strengths of the documentary is that you can see the emotional side of Kim Jin-man and Lee Seon-gyu. In the 1990s, in front of Hongik University, the two people who were active in the project band ‘Choco Cream Rolls’ (CCR) are also close friends. Lee Seon-gyu was the CCR vocalist, but Kim Jin-man did not even talk to him, but after recruiting Kim Yoon-a, he talked about the situation. Lee Seon-gyu is said to be angry, but he said, “It can’t be helped” and immediately agreed. Afterwards, the band that Kim Yoon-a joined changed its name to ‘The Ugly Duck’.
Having been active as the flagship band of the Hongdae indie club Blue Devil, they changed their team name to Jaurim in 1997 along with the theme song ‘Hey Hey Hey’ from the movie ‘Man with a Flower’, and as everyone knows, they became the history of the Korean band Shin.
However, in the documentary, Kim Jin-man shed tears, lamenting that “the song is becoming a better match now” than when ‘Shining’ was released. Singing “Even if I don’t try to hide my poor soul / Will there be someone who will hug me”, this song was included in Jaurim’s 6th album ‘Ashes to Ashes’ (2006), which was evaluated as ‘heavy gray’. . There are not one or two people who choose this song as a song of life as a consolation song for those who are suffering from being alive. Even at the sing-along screening, this song was included in the ending credits, and quite a few people shed tears in the audience.

Jaurim’s songs also form a consensus abroad. A Hong Kong fan who says she attends a Korean language school said that she really likes Jaurim’s ‘Twenty Five, Twenty One’ at the singalong screening that day. I have already watched ‘Jaurim, The Wonderland’ for the second time.
The reason why Jaurim can be loved for such a long time regardless of borders and times is that it is a band that is currently in progress. Yuna Kim said that it is the sentence that is the biggest topic for her these days, and she said, “We are on the way.” It is also a key keyword for the solo album currently being worked on. Yuna Kim has said in the past that she “wouldn’t need music if I could be 100% happy”. Of course, she said she knew very well that she couldn’t be 100% happy. That’s why we need music, especially Jaurim.
‘Jaurim, The Wonderland’ is currently being screened mainly at Megabox.
